Paige Sorvillo  (images from Third Skin, and a Butoh Western)
has been choreographing, directing and performing since 1990. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, she began ballet lessons at age three and has been moving ever since. Her recent work includes video performance in Tanya Calamoneri’s inkBoat production of A Bottomless Pit at New College/EPI, San Francisco (2003), solo performance of Third Skin work-in-progress at Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, CA (2002), performance in Tenement Butoh’s Rehearsals for the Spinning Industry at Art Angels at the Cowell Theater (2002), performance in Tanya Calamoneri’s Fathom at EPI & Temescal Arts (2002). She was a primary collaborator and performer for Degenerate Art Ensemble’s production of Nymph at Seattle’s On the Boards (2002). In 2001 she was a collaborator and performer for inkBoat’s Cockroach directed by Shinichi Momo Koga and performed both in Germany as well as at San Francisco’s Theater Artaud. She was also featured in Eric Koziol’s award-winning short film The Duchess based on inkBoat’s Cockroach. From 1990 to 1996 she choreographed, directed and performed her own work in the Boston area as well as performing with Peter diMuro and Craig Quintero among others. Starting in 2000 she has studied Butoh extensively with the following teachers: Akira Kasai, Katsura Kan, Diego Pinon, Yumiko Yoshioka, SU-EN, Joan Laage, Yukio Waguri, Hiroko Tamano, Doranne Crable, Kokoro, Shinichi Momo Koga, Denise Fujiwara and Yuko Kaseki. She has also done intensive study with Ruth Zaporah and Cassie Terman in Action Theater. (highlighted are teachers I have studied with most intensely). Paige has a private practice in rehabilitative Pilates and teaches Pilates and Butoh-based movement in Oakland at the Temescal Arts Center. She is co-founder with Molly Barrons of the butoh@home series which seeks to build the local Butoh community, provide opportunities for regular training and encourage creative work in this form here at home.
