About the show:
This exhibit, Performance Photography, is a collection of live performance imagery created with local performers Kinji Hayashi, Leigh Evans, Joshua Kohl , Cassie Terman, Paige Sorvillo as part of recent performances by them. The show is part of Live Art Evolution performance festival and workshop series that is occurring during August at the Temescal Art Center.

Unique to this particular body of work is its inextricably shared creative source. Each image on the wall represents the creative work of many people - including the performing artists in their conception and realization of each performance, the aesthetic work of each artist's production team of directors, muscians and costume, set, lighting & sound designers), and, significantly, the photographer. The images captured by the camera and photographer are absolutely dependent on the work of the performing artists and yet, the images you see are not images your eye could capture as an audience member, nor images fully anticpated by the performers themselves. Performance Photography marks the beginning of a new exploration into the area where narrative and concept intersect live performance and the still image. As part of this process of exploration Evans, Terman and Sorvillo have included text from the original shows as part of the installation.

This exhibit is part of Live Art Evolution - a festival of new performance including performances and workshop by the artists photographed here. Live Art Evolution is a project of the Center for Live Art - dedicated to investigating the evolution of live performance at the intersection of dance, theater and other time-based arts by providing a permanent artist-owned physical home for Live Art in the East Bay; an educational program for emerging performing artists; and teaching, rehearsal and performance opportunities for local and international performing artists working in and across the time-based arts.
